Bard, along with 5 others, was used in a series of radiation experiments supported by the Atomic Energy Commission. Bard initially was exposed to whole body gamma irradiation for 13 hours and 20 minutes on January 15, 1957. Bard's white blood cell count declined, he developed severe diarrhea, and after 28 days he died. The autopsy report read: “The state of depletion, from radiation exposure and the experimental dietary regimen certainly contributed to death that was due to a combination of pneumonia, toxic myocardosis, toxic nephrosis, and adrenal hemorrhage." Bard was just shy of his 17th birthday when he died.
