Peter was given a morphine sedative and then left unattended in an outdoor enclosure where he died of "sunstroke." Yerkes was clearly disturbed by the negligence that led to Peter's easily preventable death, particularly since Peter was a second generation captive-born individual. Yerkes established specific protocols for monitoring chimps under sedation. Peter was not yet two years old when he died.
