Hank, along with 5 others, was used in a series of radiation experiments supported by the Atomic Energy Commission. Hank initially was exposed to whole body irradiation for 13 hours and 15 minutes on May 1, 1957. Hank was irradiated a second time on March 8, 1962, got very sick, but recovered and was then sacrificed on May 28. He was 17 years old when he died.
