Balt, a young male chimp, was purchased from Johns Hopkins on April 6, 1946, to be used for surgical removal of the temporal lobe. The YLPB director, Karl Lashley, said he did not “not care to risk our own more valuable specimens.”

Balt was used in an experimental brain operation on November 7, 1946. He was "sacrificed" since it appeared improbable that he could survive a second brain operation
